Melon Daycare has been servicing the Ishinomaki community for over 25 years. Thankfully, located nearly 10 kilometers from the coast, it was not directly impacted by the tsunami. Unfortunately, many other Ishinomaki daycare facilities were and, as a result, Melon Daycare saw student enrollment suddenly increased by more than fifty percent after the 3/11 disaster.
A new wing was added to the school to accommodate influx of children, however, there were insufficient funds for extra play equipment needed. A “schools helping schools” fund raising program was initiated.
To our delight, the SUMMERHILL INTERNATIONAL school got right on board and together with grant money from USA based charity, the Direct Relief Fund, we were able to install a large play set as remodel the entire school yard. The kids and teacher were delighted by the results – success!
