The Karakuwa Peninsula was hit hard by the March 11th tsunami. Four of the eight recreational facilities on the peninsula were devastated by the tsunami and still remain closed. The government hopes to attract families back to the area by providing a park area for children. One of the four remaining recreational areas would be impossible to develop due to a lack of space to build a play set. Although a play set could be built at either of the two remaining locations, the local government prefers to develop the Karakuwa Visitor location.

To have the opportunity to work with both the prefectural and local government to develop a recreational area on National Park land is, in itself, an extraordinary opportunity. This opportunity is made even more attractive by the fact that it will attract local families and tourist and help facilitate the reconstruction process by enhancing the recreational facilities on the Karakuwa Peninsula.
